A Good Warm Up Will Help Reduce Injuries

One of the most important aspects of any workout routine is often the most overlooked element, the warm up. A properly done warm up with help reduce the likelihood of injuries that often happen during an exercise routine or a game. Note, it is a proper warm up that is important, not just a quick stretch.    

The purpose of the warm up is to increase blood flow through the body, so that the heart is not overloaded. The warm up is also designed to help improve flexibility of the muscles and joints in the body making movement easier. This is not to say that there is one perfect warm up routine, it is a very individualized element. You will need to try a few different warm up routines to find the one that works best for you and the type of exercise you will be doing.    

With that being said there are certain elements that need to be in every warm up routine for it to be considered proper and it has something to do with the type of warm up routine. There are related warm ups which are routines that are very similar to the type of exercise you will be doing. These are done by gradually increasing the intensity of the sport you are doing. A runner, for example, may start their related warm up with a walk, to a brisk walk, to a jog, sprint then run. A warm up routine can also be unrelated. Flexibility exercises and calisthenics are often used for unrelated warm-ups.

Many people wonder the length of time they need to perform the warm up. Again that is going to vary by person. Some people only need 15 minutes, other people need longer. You will also notice that your muscles will not feel as fatigued as quickly when you warm them up properly so you can actually workout longer.

There is also a mental benefit to warming up the right way, you become prepared mentally for the workout you are about to get. Whether you are playing in a competitive sport or training for a marathon, when you take the time to warm up the body so that it can perform better you also prepare your mind for what lies ahead. Positive mental imagery prior to a workout or competition has been shown to improve the performance of the person.
