Are Acai Berries The Ultimate Super Food?

You may be wondering what all the hype is about acai berries?

The name “acai” is associated with the word, “Super Food” and good health in general.  Most people stop and at least take a second look when they see “acai berry” on a label of juices, sweets, ice cream, weight loss products and even various cosmetic products.

One has to wonder, is it all it’s cracked up to be?

The answers are both yes and no.  First of all, it’s safe to say that depending on your definition of “Super Food” there really isn’t such a thing.  One food cannot keep you healthy or exclusively provide you with good health.  Good health comes from a combination of great genes, a balanced diet, exercise, and a healthy outlook on life. However, several different “Super Foods” combined can offer tremendous health benefits for those who incorporate them into their daily diet.      

That said the acai berry has some healthy components.   It contains anthocyanins, specifically cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-glucoside-coumarate, which are powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, responsible for premature aging, heart disease and even cancer.  Anthocyanin gives fruits, vegetables and flowers their red, purple and blue colors.

It’s no surprise then, that blueberries, red grapes, cherries, cranberries, mulberries and red wine all contain anthocyanins. The benefits of red wine have been touted for years, the reason being its high level of anthocyanins. Acai berries have 30 times more antioxidants and 10 times more than red grapes, so there is some credence to the hype.

Acai Berries also contain high levels of flavonoids, phenolics, including catechin and epi-catechin, the latter being compounds acai shares with green tea.  These little berries pack a powerful punch with their high levels of quercetin, phytonutrients, B vitamins, fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and if those were not enough, acai berries contain minerals such as potassium, copper and manganese.  With all that, you would think it just had to taste horrible, right.  Wrong, its flavor has been described as a mixture of berries and chocolate.

Acai ranks impressively high on the ORAC Scale – Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity that measures the total antioxidant activity of foods and supplements.  Most people should get at least 2000 units per day on the ORAC scale.  Shockingly, 80-90 percent of the world’s population fails to consume even half that amount.   Acai berries could certainly narrow the gap significantly because its ORAC ranking far surpasses any other berry.  In fact the acai berry ranks 67% higher than the pomegranate and over 500% higher than the blueberry.  Wow!

Acai oil has now become a popular component in cosmetic products.  This is primarily because of its high antioxidant level, but also because even after processing and storage, the antioxidant levels are maintained.

Will the acai berry help you lose weight?

There have been studies conducted, including one in which mice were fed anthocyanin extracts from the acai berry.  According to the study, the mice that were given the anthocyanin, despite being fed a high-fat diet for 8 weeks, actually gained less weight than those mice not given anthocyanins.   Of course, one study does not proof make, but the results are certainly promising and warrant more study.

Does this mean that you should give up on the dietary pyramid?

Not so fast, a balanced diet and lifestyle is still the most promising way to maintain good health.
