Sometimes referred to by children as “little trees”, broccoli is a vegetable that belongs to the cabbage family. Broccoli consists of a green head which consists of small buds which are on branches that are attached to a thick green stem which can be eaten. Broccoli said to date back 2,000 years and originated from a wild cabbage patch. The Italians are well known for consuming since the days of the Roman Empire. Broccoli was officially introduced to the United States in the 1920s by Italian immigrants. There are three types of broccoli. They include calabrese, romanesco and sprouting. The calabrese variety is the kind that most individuals are familiar with. It is named after the city Calabria in Italy. The Romanesco brand is yellow-greenish and the heads of this broccoli have a distinctive shape. The sprouting broccoli has thin stalks with a number of heads. Individuals that want a healthy green vegetable should consider broccoli.    

Broccoli is produced in a number of countries such as China, India, Italy, the United States and Spain just to name a few. In the North American region, the United States produces much of the broccoli in the state of California. Over 1 million tons o broccoli are produced each year.  When cultivating broccoli it is very important that it is grown in the correct temperatures. Broccoli is best grown in cooler temperatures of about 64-73 degrees. It is considered to be a cool weather crop and it does not flourish very well in warm weather. Broccoli is ready to be harvested when the cluster of flowers on the head of the broccoli appear green. It is best to harvest broccoli while the heads are green rather than yellow. Individuals can simply use sheers to cut the broccoli away from the patch.    

Broccoli contains a number of vitamins and minerals. It is known to be very high in vitamins C, K and A making it an excellent choice as one of required servings of vegetables for daily nutritional intake. A serving of broccoli provides 30mg of Vitamin C. It is also very high fiber making broccoli both vitamin and fiber rich. It has been shown that eating broccoli could reduce the risk of cancer because of the anti-cancer properties found in the naturally occurring ingredients diindolylmethane and selenium. The diindolylmethane also assists in moderating the immune system and promotes antiviral and antibacterial activity. Broccoli is even said to help prevent heart disease.

As with many vegetables, the preparation is key to maintaining the nutrients and obtaining the health benefits from consuming broccoli. Boiling of broccoli is not recommended. It has been shown that when broccoli is boiled the levels of anti-cancer nutrients are significantly reduced. Thus, people are urged to steam, stir fry or consume broccoli in a raw state. Preparing and eating broccoli in this manner will ensure that all the nutrimental value isn’t boiled out and pour down the drain. There are many dishes in which broccoli can be used.
