Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a renowned dermatologist who has written several books on weight loss and anti-aging regimens, has ordained the acai berry the “#1 super food.” He’s not alone. The title is commonly associated with the acai berry in books, websites, and a slew of health supplements as well as weight loss diets.

Is all the hype justified?

I guess it depends on your definition of “super food.” It’s important to consider that the acai berry might just be the newest of the en vogue foods. By now, we’ve all heard of noni juice and the goji berry. They are the acai berry’s recent predecessors of this coveted title.

You may be wondering, if the acai berry is really a super food or is it just the latest fad. The truth is probably both. No food is a super food in the sense that there isn’t one food that, by itself, can make you the picture of health. If your goal is to be healthy, then that requires a combination of many things. Aside from good genes, you have to commit yourself to a healthy balanced diet, exercise, activities that lessen your stress level as well as a positive outlook on life. If you’re looking for a one-stop shop to finding good health, it simply doesn’t exist.

Is acai a nutritious and healthy fruit?

Like many fruits, it’s full of antioxidants, fiber, flavonoids, and phytonutrients. However, acai is actually a pretty exceptional fruit in terms of its powerhouse of healthy nutrients. It also contains B vitamins, protein, omega-3 acids and oleic acid. If that weren’t enough this amazing little fruit also contains minerals, such as potassium, copper and manganese.

Acai is a purple fruit from the acai palm tree that grows in Central and South America. Antioxidants called anthocyanins are attributed for providing its beautiful color and, it comes by its color honestly, as anthocyanin is Greek for “plant” and “blue.” Anthocyanins are also the antioxidants that give the red, purple and blue coloring to other fruits, vegetables and flowers such as blueberries, pomegranates, cherries, red grapes and blackberries. Anthocyanins aren’t just responsible for the beauty of the acai berry, but are also a powerful weapon in the immune system’s fight against free radicals.

Free radicals are insidious atoms that attack healthy cells, causing them to mutate. When cells mutate to the point at which the immune system can’t keep up the fight, the result is premature aging and illnesses such as heart disease and even cancer. It is also important to note that if your immune system is flying solo, it zaps a tremendous amount of your body’s energy, because it has to work in over-drive. This leaves you exhausted and that is no way to go through life. Antioxidants fight the good fight against free radicals and actually neutralize them, allowing your immune system to work at a healthier pace.

It’s true that we live in a world in which the air is full of pollutants and even under the best of circumstances we are exposed to dangerous chemicals, unnatural hormones and pesticides. There is a lot that can make you sick and it’s a little known fact that the immune system is constantly bombarded with environmental contaminants. The immune system is a magnificent machine, but it can’t keep you healthy all by itself. You can help by empowering yourself by living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. One sure way to do this to eat a healthy diet, which includes antioxidant-high foods; a great choice being acai berries.

It seems like there is a never ending quest for the great secret to weight loss. Everything from great grandma’s recipe to modern scientific discoveries have been used and abused in an effort to lose that extra poundage. Advertisements and commercials promise immediate and fully successful weight loss with just the use of a few pills each day. Numerous diet plans are available that supposedly provide the perfect plan for trimming down.

Of course none of these special plans or pills are free, they all come at a price, and often a rather expensive price tag at that! Unfortunately, all too many of these purported weight purging techniques are nothing more than that another technique. There will always be another person with another idea at the expense of a naïve or desperate society.

So, how can a person truly lose weight?

What is the right plan?

We tend to run with greedy eyes to the newest fad, the newest diet, and all too often with great disappointment. Sometimes going back to the basics is the best way to accomplish some of the most formidable feats of life. Losing weight doesn’t have to be a great struggle or costly process. There are some basic ways to lose weight that are both workable and affordable.

First, the right mindset is essential to accomplish any task or goal in life. If I am going to lose those extra pounds, I have to be determined in my own mind that it is something I can and will achieve. Human nature tends to dictate to us that if at first I don’t succeed then I need to simply stop. Weight loss is not an easy task. It takes determination and time. The miracle weight loss programs that make their grandiose claims of phenomenal, and speedy weight loss, are for the most part scams.

Unfortunately, they tend to build a mindset that I will look like that toned actor on television who supposedly used that weight loss product and lost an incredible 50 pounds in an unbelievable short time. I have to remind myself that no one product can really do that, and if I am to lose weight I must be determined that I can do this, but it may take a great deal of dedication and time. The right mindset is the beginning place of losing weight.

Second, a healthy weight loss diet is highly recommended, but not one that requires a drastic reduction of calories. The best rule is to take it easy, and slowly reduce certain foods and calories. As the body begins to lose weight it requires less calorie intake to maintain endurance and good physical health. Yet, this takes time. Once again, patience is going to be a key to success. Make sure that you look carefully at a variety of food plans, and choose one that best fits your needs.

Third, eating right is great, but doing so with no physical activity is senseless. A basic exercise or workout plan is essential to burning those calories and ultimately losing those extra pounds. Start easy and build as your strength and endurance builds. Just as one diet plan is not good for everyone, so no one exercise program will work for everyone. Find a program that works for your particular, weight, age, and time economy then get at it! Make it a routine or habit for your life!

There are many ways to lose weight. Check them out. See what program best meets your needs and set your mind to do it! You must own the program in your mind, will, daily routine, and diet. If you do then you will be on the right path to weight loss.

Also known as the Chinese gooseberry, kiwifruit is a very delicious fruit that is known for its appearance and flavor. Kiwis are about egg size and have a brown fuzzy-like surface. When cut open a bright lime green flesh is revealed. Within the bright lime green flesh are black seeds which can be eaten. The skin is somewhat tough, but the flesh is soft. There are both green and yellow kiwifruit.

The Gold Kiwifruit has a yellow flesh which is characterized by its sweet flavor and less acidic base which is found in the traditional green kiwifruit. The golden variety is also shaped with a pointed end and is a bit less hairy than the green variety of the kiwifruit. It should be noted that although most people removed the skin from the kiwi before consumption it is edible.

The kiwifruit is native to southern China. Other varieties of the kiwifruit are available in Japan and India. The kiwifruit is the national fruit of the People’s Republic of China. The kiwifruit would eventually be cultivated in New Zealand when Mary Isabel Fraser, a principal of girl’s school, was visiting a school in China and obtained the kiwi seeds and bought them to New Zealand.

The seeds were planted by the nurseryman Alexander Allison in 1906 and the first fruit appeared in 1910. Currently, there are a number of countries which cultivate kiwifruit which include Italy, New Zealand, France, Chile, Japan, Greece and the United States. Kiwifruit is still grown in China, but the country is not considered to be a major producer of the fruit today.

The process of cultivating kiwifruit is interesting. This fruit is produced in warm climates. In order for fruit to be produced pollination is necessary. It can be difficult to pollinate kiwifruit because the flowers of this fruit are not very preferred by bees. Thus, to increase pollination two methods are used. There is the method of saturation pollination where a large number of beehives are placed in the kiwi orchards forcing them to collect pollen from these plants.

Also, there is the method of blowing pollen over the female flowers to begin germination. Because many kiwifruit can be produced on one vine it is necessary to grow this fruit on a supportive structure. Many times the structure is also accented with a watering system to ensure proper irrigation.

Kiwifruit is a small fruit which packs a load of healthy nutrients. Kiwifruit are very delicious, and there are a number of vitamins and minerals available in this fruit. It is very high in vitamin C and it also contains potassium, vitamin A and vitamin E. The skin of the kiwifruit contains antioxidants so even though people usually discard this part of the kiwifruit they shouldn’t because it offers lots of health benefits.

Kiwifruit is also high in fiber making it a natural laxative. It is possible that there are a number of cardiovascular benefits to eating kiwifruit as it is a natural blood thinner which means it can naturally prevent blood clots and lowers the fat content in the blood to prevent blockages. Because kiwifruit contains lutein it can also be consumed to promote eye health.

Strawberry milkshakes. Strawberry jam. Strawberry ice cream. Strawberry pie. Who doesn’t love the sweet, tart, and unmistakable taste of strawberries? Strawberries are cultivated worldwide, so the answer is probably not many people. They are beautiful, bright red, and smell heavenly. They are often eaten fresh, or in one of the treats listed above; in fact, their flavor is also reproduced and used in commercial food products.

An accessory fruit, derived from the plant’s receptacle instead of the ovaries, strawberries were first grown in France in the year 1740. They were really a hybrid of two different types of strawberry, a cross between the Fragaria Virginiana of North America (famous for its flavor) and the Fragaria Chiloensis from Chile and Argentine (famous for its size). Now, growers produce the woodland strawberry, first grown in the early seventeenth century.

Strawberries vary across color, size, flavor, ripening season, likelihood of succumbing to disease, and shape. Often the foliage of the plants is different as well. Growing methods vary as well, and cultivators use either the plasticulture method or the method of matted rows. Sometimes, in the off-season, strawberries are grown in greenhouses. Most growers use the plasticulture system to grow their strawberries.

Raised beds are formed and then covered in plastic after being fumigated. The plants are put through holes, and then irrigation tubes are placed under the plastic. The plastic prevents weeds from growing around the plant beds. At harvest time, the plastic is taken away. This system requires a long growing season, and invites high costs due to making and plastic coating the mounds. In colder climates, it is more common for growers to use the method of matted rows. It requires less maintenance and costs less to implement, but yields fewer fruit.

Another method of growing strawberries uses a compost sock, which gives strawberries with higher ORAC, or oxygen radical absorbance capacity, flavonoids, glucose, anthocyanins, fructose, malic acid, sucrose, and citric acid than fruit grown through other methods. Strawberries can also be grown by seed, but it’s not a widely used method in the commercial market. Seeds can be collected from the fruit themselves. Many people grow them at home in pots.

Strawberries are typically harvested and cleaned in the traditional way. Strawberries must be harvested by hand. The fleshy fruit are quite delicate, and machine processing would simply smash them. The packing and grading of the fruit happens in the field. Water streams and bumping, shaking conveyor belts wash the fruit as they move through processing. The United States produces the majority of the world strawberry market, followed by Spain and Turkey.

Many pests attack strawberries, including aphids, strawberry sap beetles, fruit flies, slugs, chafers, moths, strawberry root weevils, strawberry crown moths, strawberry thrips, and mites. Additionally, strawberries are not immune to diseases, and succumb to gray mold, leaf spot, rhizopus rot, leaf blight, verticillium wilt, red stele, black root rot, powdery mildew, nematodes, and slime molds. A windy area can prevent a fungus from growing.

In addition to being easy to cultivate, strawberries are also very nutritious fruit. They are a great source of flavonoids and vitamin C, and have few calories. Strawberries are an excellent source of fiber, potassium, and calcium. They also have beauty benefits; it is rumored that rubbing raw strawberries over your teeth will actually whiten them!

Sadly, some people are allergic to strawberries. The most common allergy is through oral consumption, but may also occur in the form of hives or breathing problems. For those with the allergy, white-fruited strawberries may be the answer. They lack the protein necessary for normal ripening, and so do not turn red. They are almost completely allergen-free!

Hopefully, everyone, even those with allergies, enjoy strawberries when they can. They are delicious, nutritious, and employ benefits for the body, both inside and out.

The Chinese Wolf Berry has become increasing popular because of the discovery of its many nutritional benefits. Many people may know this berry by the names Himalayan or Tibetan goji as these are the names that are used to describe this product on the heath food market. These berries are used for a number of different purposes. Native to the southeastern portions of Asia and Europe, a large portion of the Chinese wolf berries are cultivated on plantations. China is the main producer of wolf berries.

They are so highly valued in Chinese culture that they are sometimes referred to as “red diamonds”, and there is a festival held each year to celebrate their importance. The plant itself consists of lavender bell shaped flowers and, the berry is a bright red which contains up to 60 yellow seeds. These plants usually bloom and flower from June through September. The berries usually ripen between July and October.

China is the main cultivator of the wolf berry, and there are numerous plantations that are approximately 100-1000 acres dedicated to their growth. The Ningxia is known as being the area where wolf berries are cultivated. The berries in this region have been grown for over 600 centuries and they are regarded as being of premium quality or superior grade for those berries used in Chinese medicine. In order to cultivate this fruit properly the berries must be either shaken or picked gently as they are very fragile when ripe to prevent them from spoiling. These berries are then dried before being sold or exported. The drying process is done in two ways. These berries can be dried in the sun or by hydration using a machine.

Wolf berries have a number of different nutrient properties. They contain calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium, riboflavin and high levels of vitamin C. These berries also have unsaturated fatty acids, beta carotene, amino acids and poly and monosaccharides. It is also very important that wolfberries naturally contain many of the nutrients that the body needs to function properly on a daily basis. Because of all the naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and other health benefits wolf berries are known as a “super fruit”.

Wolf berries are used for a number of different purposes. They are used quite often in Chinese cuisine for tonic soups, teas and even beer. Wolf berries are used to address a number of different health benefits. These berries are known to protect against such conditions as cardiovascular diseases and vision related problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration. These berries have a high level of antioxidants which help to prevent a number of diseases.

Wolf berries are used in a number of different products for those that want to experience the health benefits of this fruit directly. There are a number of drinks that are marketed as goji juice which contain wolfberry juice blended with other juices. There are also health food products such as granola bars and nut mixes which contain wolf berries. There are a number of different products which contain wolf berries which can be consumed for a variety of health benefits.

Raspberries, the perennial plant with vibrant color and flavor, might not be the most popular red fruit on the market, but they are certainly among the healthiest. They protect against many diseases, have lots of other nutritive content, and are simply delicious. Raspberries come in many varieties, have many health benefits, and have an interesting history.

Not only are they wonderfully healthy and tasty, raspberries also come in many varieties, including the Korean Raspberry, European Red Raspberry, Western Raspberry, Blue Raspberry, Black Raspberry, Wine Raspberry, and the American Red Raspberry. Some plant experts believe the Eurasian and American red raspberries to belong to a single species, Rubus idaeus, with the European plants categorized as either R. idaeus subsp. idaeus or R. idaeus var. idaeus, and the North American red raspberries categorized as either R. idaeus subsp. strigosus, or R. idaeus var. strigosus.

Raspberries are grown in Russia, Serbia, the US, Poland, Germany, the Ukraine, Canada, Hungary, the UK, and France. They are produced in these countries for the fresh fruit market, yet are also sent to commercial processing. Dried raspberries, frozen raspberries, raspberry jam and jelly, raspberry sauce, and raspberry puree are only a few of the many raspberry uses.

Raspberries are traditionally a summer crop; however, with new advances in growing technologies, raspberries can be found year-round. Like most plants, they need lots of water and sun to grow to their full potential, but heavily wet soil or too much irrigation can cause “root rot,” a serious disease causing big problems for raspberries. The plants are quite vigorous growers, and are sometimes quite invasive. They tend to spread rather quickly if allowed to grow without proper pruning, especially because birds can carry the seeds quite far, leading many people to believe that the raspberry plant growing in their yard is really a weed.

A raspberry harvest takes place when the fruit can be pulled off the receptacle with ease, and has changed to its deep color. At this time, the fruit is ripe, and will be most sweet. Now is the time to pull out the canning jars and create some delicious raspberry jam! The raspberries’ leaves can be used fresh or dried. Sometimes they are used in herbal teas or medicines to regulate a woman’s menstruation.

Many species of raspberries have even been cross-bread: red raspberries with black raspberries to make purple raspberries, for example. There have been many resulting hybrids; boysenberry is one.

Sadly, raspberries are not immune to pests. They are commonly attacked by wasps, butterflies, moths, gray mold, and verticillium wilt (caused by nearness to potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, or bulbs).

Raspberries do offer many health benefits. They are a good source of energy, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. They are chock-full of antioxidants, and have been linked in early medical research to prevention of inflammation, pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergies, cognitive decline (old-age), and degeneration of eyesight.

Raspberries are certainly a wonderful berry choice. If you are looking for a berry to please your palate, raspberries offer sweet taste to savor and body benefits that can last a lifetime.

Flax, also known as linseed. originated from India and has been used since ancient times. It is an annual plant that grows blue flowers with five petals, and can occasionally found in bright red. The fruit is round, brown and glossy and looks much like an apple seed. The seeds and the fibers of this plant are used, both for different purposes.

There are two basic varieties of flax, yellow and brown.

Flax seeds produce oil called flaxseed or linseed oil. It is used as a drying oil in paintings and varnishing. Flax seeds are very healthy and full of fiber and protein. The seeds are often mixed with other foods for an added benefit of fiber and protein. They provide a slightly nutty flavor to the foods to which they are added. The sprouts can also be eaten, and they have a spicy flavor. The sprouts can help to remove bowel obstruction and were added to foods for thousands of years.

Flax seeds have been proven to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The seeds and oil can be used as an anti-inflammatory and laxative. It seems to have a better effect on women. It has been proven to lessen tumors in breasts and prostate. The oil can help to heal burns, and scraped tissues. The oil can also be applied to the chest for colds and coughs. There is new evidence that it can strengthen the immune system.

The flesh of the herb has been used for centuries to make cloth. The plant is harvested and put through a process to make it into a string. It has been used to make cloth and fabrics for thousands of years.

The vegetarian diet is actually more than merely a diet to many people it is a way of life and habit. There are estimated to be twenty million vegetarians in America. Of course the term “vegetarian” covers a lot of ground, and does not fully define the various types of vegetarians there are.

Basically a vegetarian diet is one which either partially or totally excludes any meats or animal products. Yet with that stated there are a number of different vegetarian diets. If you are looking into a vegetarian diet you would be well served by looking at each of these diets to determine which one might best suit your needs or tastes.

A vegan diet is one which is absolutely exclusive of all meats and animal products and consists only of foods of plant origin. People who choose this form of diet are called “vegans.” This is the most strict and limiting diet of its kind. The lacto-vegan diet also consists of plant foods but there is also the addition of all or some dairy products.

Another variation of this diet is the semi or partial vegetarian which again concentrates on plant foods, but my include poultry, fish, dairy products, and eggs. The lacto-ovovegetarian diet also includes plant foods as well as dairy products and eggs. None of the these diets contain any red meat foods. The main emphasis of any of the vegetarian diets is a concentration on sustenance and nutrition from plant foods.

A health diet of this type will definitely have a number of positive attributes, but they also have some rather negative factors. On the good or positive side of this diet are found some enticing health benefits. That tends to be the primary reason why people choose this diet in the first place. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans vegetarian diets have been associated with a lower risk for a number of chronic diseases and even certain types of cancer.

Research on plant foods has indicated that those who participate in a vegan diet are at a lower risk for cardiovascular disease and obesity. Hypertension, renal disease, and type 2 diabetes are also health risks that are considered lower in vegetarians. The problem with too much cholesterol is also eradicated, because cholesterol only comes from animal foods.

On the down side of the vegetarian diet is the concern that these diets may lack in certain nutrients and vitamins. This can be particularly risky for children who need these nutrients for growth and development. The vitamins and nutrients that may be lacking in these diets are Protein, Zink, Iron, Riboflavin, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D. The vegan diet being the purest of the vegetarian diets risks lacking these essential nutrients and vitamins the most. The other no meat diets make up some of the difference with the addition of milk products and some meats.

Overall, the vegetarian diets offer a great deal to consider both from positive benefits and negative concerns. Anyonr choosing to pursue a vegetarian diet should first consult their physician about the health factors. Plenty of information is available about these diets both from medical resources and from the internet.

Liquid diets have been around for as long as anyone can remember. Some are prescribed diets under the medical care of a physician, and others can simply be purchased over the counter at your local pharmacy or grocery store. Just like any diet plan, an all liquid diet will be as effective for the user as the user makes it. Also there is no one plan that is perfect for everyone If you are looking into this form of weight loss and weight control you would be wise to investigate a number of questions.

What is a liquid diet?

Do these diets really work?

Are they safe to use?

Is a liquid diet something I want to use in my health plan?

These types of diets are designed to limit calorie intake. Some are a simple, once a day drink and others replace all your meals during the day. Others are to be used along with a smaller intake of calories in lighter meals. The variety and options are essentially unlimited. Some liquid diets are implemented as a short term, crash program; whereas, others are intended for a long term use. Liquid diets may consist of juices or shakes that are premade. They may also be in the form of a powder or liquid that you mix with water, milk, or juice.

Most of these products advertize that they contain all the nutrition and vitamins you need in a daily allocation. The intent is to provide a healthy balance of nutrition while limiting the calorie intake. Some liquid diet products boast of being a means of cleansing the system by not only reducing calories, but also flushing undesirable toxins and impurities from the body. This is based more on theory and speculation than real scientific study and evidence.

Liquid diets have worked for some people and yet not for others. There is no perfect diet plan that works for everyone. No doubt commercialism has promoted every product imaginable as the one diet plan that will revolutionize your life as if that particular product or plan was a miracle product. That simply is not reality. Once again, no one plan is successful or recommended for all persons.

You will simply have to do some research on the plan or product you are considering using. The one thing to always remember with any diet plan is that the diet product itself is not the real answer, limiting a reasonable amount of calorie intake is. A liquid diet may help an individual lose weight with very quick results, but real success will only arrive if there is a continual change in eating habits and calorie consumption.

A liquid diet may work well with your personal physical needs or it may be harmful to you. Too little calorie intake can make an individual sluggish and weak feeling. The human body needs a certain amount of calorie and vitamin ingestion to sustain the normal functions and activities of a person. A lack of proper calories can also do irreversible damage to the body and organs. Liquid diets must be used responsibly and in accordance with the suggested directions of the product or prescription of a medical professional. A visit with your personal physician would be a very wise consideration before starting any kind of drastic weight loss regimen whether with a liquid diet or any other product.

Is a liquid diet right for you?

The answer to that question is dependent upon a number of factors. Your desired weight loss, your current health, and your ability to follow a prescribed program should all be taken into consideration. Too many people want a quick fix without having to make life changes. Make sure you know the product or plan you intend to use, and understand a product alone will not keep the pounds away.
