Coping With Your Anxiety Disorder

We have all had the experience of being anxious.  There may have been a special occasion, person or event, which required the best we had and we were anxious that we would be unable to deliver.  On the other hand, we may have been so confident of our ability to deliver that we became anxious and jittery.  Being anxious is not a disease.  It is a part of life.  When we become so anxious however that it starts to impair or negatively affect our natural ability to function, we need to adjust our lives.

As with any problem, the solution begins with the willingness to acknowledge and confront the problem.  Failure to address the root cause of anxiety will result in a problem that can lead to further and more complicated situations such as loss of health, psychiatric problems and quite possibly loss of life.  It is very important that anxiety disorders are treated as soon as possible and are resolved quickly before they escalate.

There are medicines available that are able to treat anxiety disorders.  These will treat the symptoms but not the condition itself.  The condition is best treated by a resolution of the issues that brought about the anxiety.  This is the best long-term treatment of anxiety disorder.  Medicines that address the symptoms will only provide short-term relief.   One way in which individuals can confront the issues that lead to anxiety disorder is through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  CBT combines behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy.  It seeks to cure anxiety disorder by addressing learnt behavior as well as the thought patterns of an individual.  CBT systematically exposes the patient to their fears and teaches them to gradually adjust their anxiety levels by using relaxation techniques.  It also focuses on changing the thought patterns of the individual so that they can release the negative thoughts, which feed their anxiety.

Other ways of addressing anxiety are rest, relaxation, sleep, physical exercise and a proper diet.  Persons who are already experiencing anxiety disorder may need some assistance in breaking the cycle.  For instance, they may benefit from having an exercise partner who would encourage them to exercise and practice proper nutrition.  They may also benefit from some encouragement to take up a hobby or some form of relaxation that affirms their self-worth.  Whether the support comes in the form of a group or one person or their family, it is important that they receive the help of others in overcoming their anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder that persists should be referred to a professional health care provider.  This will allow an assessment to be done and a treatment plan to be implemented.  Treatment may involve a combination of medicine and other treatment forms.  Careful monitoring should also be undertaken to assess the progress being made in accordance with treatment.

Anxiety disorder destroys the quality of life of an individual.  Every effort should be made to restore this quality of life.  With encouragement and determination, there is every possibility that individuals will overcome this challenge and lead fulfilling lives.
