If someone is involved in an accident, is injured, or suddenly becomes sick there is a period of time prior to the arrival of medical professionals that may be the most critical period of time in the victim’s life. How you react to this situation, what you do, or what you don’t do during this period of time can mean the difference between life and death. Everyone should be prepared to handle a situation of this nature. You owe it to your family, your neighbors, your friends, and yourself to know and understand what procedures you can use quickly and effectively during an emergency.??  ??

There should be some type of first aid kit in every home and automobile, these can be picked up at your local Wal-Mart, K-Mart or drugstore. Be sure and consider a first aid kit that will meet the needs of your particular family. You can also tailor the contents of the first aid kit to become better equipped if the need arises. Be sure that your first aid kit is not only readily available, but also well organized. Do not have first aid supplies mixed in with toothpaste and deodorant in the medicine cabinet, or thrown in the kitchen junk drawer. All first aid supplies should be labeled and organized in a container that is readily available. Keep the first aid kit for your automobile in the trunk of the vehicle.

Do not have a first aid kit that can be locked, as you may be looking for the key when that emergency happens. Place the kit on a shelf out of reach of small children, and be sure to check it periodically and restock supplies as soon as they are used up. Keep all medications including non-prescription drugs such as aspirin out of reach of children.

If you need to dispose of any unused drugs or medications, be sure and dispose of them where they cannot be found by children or pets.If an emergency occurs, verify that the victim has a pulse and good blood circulation, and then check for signs of any external bleeding. If the injured person is bleeding severely, ingested any poisonous substances, or if his heart or breathing has stopped you will need to act fast. Keep in mind that every second counts in a situation of this nature.

Make sure the injured victim’s airway is unrestricted, it is very important that the person is not having any difficulty with breathing. Check for the tongue or any foreign objects that may be blocking the victim’s airway. If the injured party is having problems breathing then you will need to administer artificial respiration immediately.Have someone call “911” or emergency medical assistance while the initial first aid is being applied.

Be sure that the caller explains the nature and severity of the emergency, and ask what preparations should be made pending the arrival of the ambulance. Remain calm and keep your patient calm, your being calm will help your patient remain calm. Moving and injured person may not cause any additional damage or pain to the victim, however it is extremely important not to move anyone who has suffered a serious back or neck injury. Keep the patient relaxed and lying down to reduce the chance of further injury or damage.

Do not allow persons that are unconscious or semiconscious to consume any fluids, as fluids may enter the windpipe and restrict breathing or cause suffocation. Don’t try and bring a person to consciousness by slapping them, shaking them, or handling them in a rough or forceful manner.

Search for an emergency medical identification card or an emblematic device that the victim may be wearing to notify you of any allergies or diseases, or other health concerns that may require special treatment.
