Summertime Slim Down

As summer approaches, it becomes increasingly difficult to hide your body behind layers of warm clothing without getting a few strange looks. This year instead of hiding in your clothes or in your home, embrace the fact that summer is an ideal time to show off your body and here are a few simple tips to help you look even better.

With more hours of daylight, it is easier to take advantage of the outdoors and be active. Exercise is important but it doesn’t have to seem like a chore. Going to the gym and jogging are healthy options but even if you don’t enjoy those activities, you’re not out of luck. You can still burn calories by going for a long, peaceful walk or by playing outside. If you play the weight loss card on a few friends, you will be able to whip together a softball, volleyball, or any other game in no time. If you do opt for an intense or competitive form of exercise, you will find that you have increased confidence and self esteem afterward. Try it yourself and see.     Another easy tip is to hydrate with water before, during and after being active. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated but you should also not allow yourself to believe that sugary drinks will energize you. Excessive sugar intake leads to weight gain and if you drink an energy drink or even a Gatorade before exercising, you may find yourself having muscle cramps or a stomach ache. Staying hydrated also flushes your system of toxins and can also make you feel less hungry and help prevent unnecessary snacking.

If you have bad sleeping habits, summer is a great time to get back into a healthy sleep routine. A large study at Case Western Reserve University showed that women who slept less than 5 hours a night were more likely to gain weight or become obese than women who slept 7 hours or more. This is due to the fact that sleep deprivation causes hormones to make you feel hungrier more often than you should. Try going to bed a little earlier and getting an earlier start in the morning.

As for eating and dieting, an agonizing diet is not necessarily the only way to eat healthier. Simply cutting back on greasy foods, having a good breakfast, and eating a heavier midday meal instead of a heavier nighttime meal can help to lose a few pounds. This has been found to be the case with Europeans, who eat a lighter dinner but a bigger lunch. Fruits and vegetables are more plentiful in the summer and even without your mother standing over you, it is still apparent that natural foods are healthier. Fruits have fructose in them but they also have plenty of fiber and that makes them much healthier snacks than candy or chips.

So this summer, quit stressing about losing weight (because stress causes weight gain!) but instead, try some of the simple things. A healthier lifestyle is not as bad as the weight loss commercials sometimes make it seem. You will not have to see food as the enemy and you can enjoy losing weight. And besides, who doesn’t enjoy being able to turn heads?
