What is Depression?

Depression is a common illness that everyone has heard about but doesn’t really know what it really is. We all know of the extreme form of sadness that is associated with it, but how extreme is it? What other effects does depression have on the body and the mind? While it is difficult to prepare ourselves from being afflicted by this condition, there is some information that we need to know if you or a loved one is suffering from it. With this info, it can help you determine what depression is and what isn’t through the symptoms and the different forms it takes.

So what is depression as seen from a medical point of view? The official definition states it as a deep form of sadness that can affect a person’s lifestyle and the amount of pleasure they get from doing everyday things. In more serious cases, people can be plagued by it for months or even years. The common treatment methods for those suffering from depression include a prescription of antidepressants and months of therapy.       

There are many notable symptoms to look out for if you think you may be suffering from depression. Finding a lack of pleasure for activities you used to enjoy, being more irritable than usual and experiencing erratic sleep patterns are a few common examples. A few other factors can also trigger your depression, such as a traumatic experience, a lack of daylight where you live or the whole and for women, your menstrual cycle can be a trigger to a milder form of depression.

Depression can take on many different forms. One of the most common types is major and minor depression. For major depression, you need to be experiencing at least five of the common symptoms for two weeks, and for minor depression you need to be experiencing at least two of the symptoms.  Bipolar disorder is another mental condition where a person can be plagued by the effects of depression for months at a time accompanied by erratic spans of energy and optimism. There are also some forms that run in families, such as dysthymia.
